The Data Brokers
After watching these 60 minutes videos, discuss how you feel about the business of selling private information:
1. Should it be legal? People willingly put there information into questionnaires and online surveys, so marketers or "data brokers" are just using information that people have put out on the internet.
2. What, if anything, should be done about the practice?
3. If you've filled out a survey or shared personal information with a company, did you have any idea that they'd be able to sell your information?
4. From the second video, what do you think about the steps the woman takes to protect her privacy?

I don't care because if a company better knows what I want then I can easily find what I want to buy. Whats wrong with that? I don't what shoes I want, but the Zucc sure does.

DeleteI agree and disagree, what you put on the internet is up to you, But I don't think its right to go through your personal information. When you fill out a survey you should use common sense and know that someone is receiving that information. It must have taken this woman a lot of time to do this but this is the world we live in and its only going less private.

DeleteI agree with Lindsay on what she said, in the end its your choice whether you want to put your information out there or not but its also not right for people to just read your information. You should always know though that when you post things on the internet or fill out surveys, people can see that so make good choices with what you post and say.

DeleteTaking someone else's information from online is wrong, but people shouldn't be putting out their personal information on websites that aren't trusted. Websites that are made out to be trusted can't even really be trusted so people need to be more careful on what they put out there. They shouldn't be taking all of our personal information though it's not anyone else's business especially someone you don't know.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mackenzie on this one, none of what these people are doing is right, taking somebody's else's information thats not yours to take is completely ridiculous. If its not yours don't take it, simple as that. You can never trust the internet to keep you safe so be careful with what you say on there and be careful what websites and other things you go on because you never know what can happen to you if you don't.

DeleteI don't think it should be legal for people to willingly put their information out there so people can see it. Everybody can see that you can be in real danger if you're not careful. People can hack you and get all of your information and you don't know what their intentions are when they do. I think that the practice should be gone to be honest. People should not be able to just take your information like that and sell it, thats yours not theirs. Honestly when i started taking surveys and stuff knew people could find out your information but i didn't know they could take it and sell it to other people. I think everybody should follow what that women did with her information, it might not be all the way smart but at least it protects you and your information from people.

DeletePeople should also know better. There are people who are gullible, but common sense should be not to share too personal of information, especially if they know their information can be put out there.

Deletei feel it is okay for companies to know some information about you but i feel it is not okay for companies to know personal information about you such as, date of birth, your age, where you work, and your address.

DeleteI don't care if companies take my information and gather information about me based on what I look at and what I do on the internet. It doesn't bother me really but I can see why it bothers others.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't affect me, but it also isn't right. If you're using the internet and putting your information out there you have to expect that it's going to be taken, it's inevitable. There's nothing controlling these people from taking your information, legal or not.

DeleteI think it's okay but you should have the option to just turn it off from sharing your information if you don't want it shared. I think its perfectly fine and legal because if you are putting yourself out there you should expect it to happen, but you should have the right to know whats being shared about you.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it should be legal, its a total loss of privacy. Most people don't think it's even happening to them, but apps and websites can find almost everyhing you do on them. The worst part i think is people are making money off of the data they collected from you and you dont even know it.
