IoT: The Internet of Things
- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smart phone.
- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you, because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.
This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".
In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.
"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”
"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."
"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."
Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

What if some Hacker-man wants to shut down the power to your house, All he needs is the connection to your Wi-fi, Then he can rob you in the dark.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly why you must have a password on, even though they can still do it sometimes...
DeleteI agree, thats why something just need to stay offline
DeleteThat's exactly why it's not a good idea, it makes it a greater risk to get hacked and things go wrong
DeleteI don't think it's a good idea because people lived just fine without all of this extra stuff.
Deletei agree, its hard to shoot a man in the dark
DeleteBut, you might as well try if you can!
DeleteI agree a lot of things could go wrong if someone hacks your device.
DeleteI agree you would have to be careful with that type of things
DeleteI think that having everything connected isn't the best thing just do to the fact that its not that hard to do those tasks and having like an automatic stove things can go wrong like starting up by itself and burning your house
ReplyDeleteI agree, things can always go wrong if everything's connected and might create more problems than there was before
DeleteVery true, the things that could go wrong probably aren't worth the benefits.
DeleteIf everything is connected life is easier, but everything is vulnerable..
DeleteYes, your phone does not need to know how many times you washed your hands in the day!
ReplyDeleteits stupid because are phones don't need to do everything for us.
DeleteI think it has some pros, in certain situations it could be helpful and enhance daily life with little things like letting you know when you leave your house you left your lights on or telling you that you ran out of milk when you run to the store. But the cons outweigh the pros, it gives more of a chance of things getting hacked or not working and crashing. Plus you would be wasting more money on pointless things.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it wastes money getting these things.
DeleteI agree it was be helpful and make certain things easier but also it can be unreliable because you could get hacked and it could crash.
DeleteI agree, yes it's cool and different but it could be expensive and not everyone has money to throw around
DeleteI don't like the idea of having everything set up to a device, because something could go wrong and it could have a malfunction that messes everything up. If someone were to hack you bad things could happen without knowing it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kenzie, having your whole life revolve around a phone is absolutely ridiculous, we have lives outside of the internet and we need to interact and get out more. Too many bad things can happen when you're on the internet all of the time anyways. Somebody can track you down and hack you and other things like that and thats just not a good thing.
DeleteI agree because it can be unreliable and something could go wrong and mess everything up.
DeleteI don't think it's a good idea because there are so many things that could go wrong, and obviously people would work out the bugs, but there's always something that could go wrong. People lived just fine before having fancy stuff like this, sure it would be helpful, but it's not a necessity.
ReplyDeletei agree, its not necessity, it's convenient, sure, but people are becoming lazier and lazier, its just more things that could go wrong
DeleteIt would be better to go back to how it was before maybe less things would go wrong.
DeleteI agree, not everything has to be connected
DeleteI disagree, If we went back to how it was before i think it would be a lot harder, everything we have made improves all the time, down to cooking our food.
DeleteI agree, somethings would be nice to be conected but yet not everything.
DeleteSomethings i'm okay with being connected, but not everything
DeleteIt's definitely not needed, sometimes the world is moving too fast and we need to slow it down sometimes. We don't need all these fancy sensors and whatnot, sometimes it's best just to do things the old way, plus you learn a lot more doing things on your own.
ReplyDeleteI like fancy sensors, Why you hating on technology. sure someone might steal your ID, but whats the big deal.
Deleteyes, I agree 198.9573%
DeleteI think that it can help make your life easier in some situations but it can also be a hassle. It can help alert you when your don't have any milk or more serious things. It can also alert you when you leave the lights on. It can be a hassle because there can be a lot of things that could go wrong like it could break. It would be nice to have so it can alert people of simple things but it isn't a necessity.
ReplyDeleteI agree it would make certain things easier but there is daily life things you should be able to do on your own like looking if you have milk in your fridge.
DeleteI don't think this would be a good idea because not everyone has a smartphone or is good with technology. Also someone could steal your identity by hacking into your electronic device.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sean in this situation because like he said not everybody is good with technology, especially older people so they aren't gonna know anything unless you teach them and that just takes up too much of your time. Plus somebody can hack whatever device you are one and cause a lot of problems.
DeleteI agree because not everyone knows how to work technology like this, older people can get more confused. People could also hack it and ake it easier to find out your personal information.
DeleteThat is true. Technology that controls important things
Deleteis more susceptible to hacking and could cause serious damage.
I think the next to be connected will be our toasters.
ReplyDeleteI think its a good idea also because like some people said, the internet is not something we need. Yeah it definitely makes everything way easier for everyone, but its not impossible to live without the internet. People back in the day had to live without it everyday and still managed to survive.
ReplyDeleteI agree but the more advanced we get the less primitive we are.
DeleteThat's true we don't necessarily need this technology. This could easily lead to other things being acessible through the internet.
DeleteI agree we don't need the internet
DeleteThis may make your life harder because many technical difficulties could happen when you turn it on. Also many people may not afford to have this which makes them more vulnerable.
ReplyDeleteI agree its all good till something breaks and it would most likely cost a lot to fix if it was new technology.
DeleteI think that it is both good and bad. For certain parts of you daily life it would be good. like if you need to unlock you doors if you not at home and can just go on an app. But also if something gets brocken it may cost too much to fix and you'll be left without it.
ReplyDeleteIt could be helpful in that it makes your daily life run more efficient. If your a forgetful person this technology can come in handy. A con would be that the technology isn't always reliable. There could be a malfunction or someone could hack your account. Letting technology have control of your appliances through the internet could be risky.
ReplyDeleteI agree that is can make life a little easier but it could also go wrong and end badly
DeleteSometimes, the world is moving too fast and it needs to slow down, most of the time we should do things the old way.
ReplyDeleteI agree, pretty soon we won't have to do any thing, even turning the lights on or locking the door. Robots will do it for us.
DeleteIf someone wanted to break into your house, all they could do is shut the power off to your house and he could easily break in.
ReplyDeleteI agree someone would just have to shut out the power.
DeleteThey would be very helpful but they will probably come with a cost and be very expensive.
