Your Online Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer, when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

  1. There are things wrong with using your own facebook for work purposes, they might not like what you post on your account. They might not like who your friends are also.

    1. Imagine you own a business, you want only the best employees. You'd probably check Facebook too.

    2. Especially if they posted about doing drugs or something, I don't think anyone would want to hire people who are doing illegal things.

    6. The reason i would be looking on Facebook is to see if i don't like them, I don't want some lazy kid working for me.

  2. Seeing them doing bad things in pictures or talking bad about somebody or something. I think it kinda gets into someones privacy, but what you post online is out there for everyone.

  3. I think an Employer has the right to know who they're hiring, if that means they look at someone's Facebook, then that's alright for me.

    6. If someone posts something for everyone to see, then businesses can look too. If you post something inappropriate you have be aware anyone can see it, even potential employers.

  5. I think it matters what job it is because for a summer ice cream parlor I don't think you need to check their Facebook. But if it is for a serious career then checkig there Facebook if totally fine.

  7. I totally think it would be ok for a employer to go and look at your social media. If you arn't posting anything bad you should'nt have no concern. Its a good way to see how responsible you are outside of work.

  8. If I was hiring someone and they had a facebook i'd probably look them up to get additional information because its important to know who you are hiring. I dont think there is anything wrong with searching someone up who could possible be a part of your store. Looking someone up could tell you if the person is a bad influence or they are good. If I found any inappropriate pictures of comments I woudn't hire them.

    1. Its important for employers to know what they would be like as employees. If they are inappropriate on social media, business's have a right to deny a person.

    1. I agree with Corbin on this subject but i would go farther than that, i would ask their parents on how they are or their friends. I feel like an opinion from someone else would be way better from my perspective.

  11. I think what i might find that would change my decision would be being inappropriate like posting stupid things on Facebook which would include posts about threatening subjects or maybe sexual references or anything like that. But if you have a good reputation and don't post bad things like that, you should be fine.

  12. I believe that it is perfectly okay for an employer to look at a possible employee's Facebook, it is out there and free to look at and you may see a side of them that isn't on the application.

  13. I think if someone post something "bad" on Facebook, you might get an idea who they are, but you that doesn't mean they had don't good work ethic, and show up to work on time. I think it's a good thing to look them up on Facebook and see who they are. If I hired someone and they showed up on time and worked hard, and came when they were suppose too, they can post what ever they want on Facebook.

  14. I wouldn't hire anyone who has a lot of profanity or racial jokes on their Facebook page.

  16. If I owned a store and was hiring I feel like I would have the right to see what they are posting online to the public to see what kind of person they really are. There's nothing wrong with checking to see what they do online if you want to hire them.

  17. I think its ok for a store to use facebook to search applicants. If someone puts something on the internet they should expect that their future employers would look at their social profile.
